P.S. 39: Artistic Sustainability

Despite Philly’s being an inexpensive city with a vibrant arts and theater culture, artists are struggling financially. Is living as an artist  actually sustainable in Philadelphia? At the Philadelphia Artists Summit over 100 dance and theater artists asked this question and  brainstormed about new models for artists’ support and advocacy. What would help you support your artistic life more sustainably? What are grassroots ways for our community to make that possible? What are next steps towards a more optimal arts economy in Philadelphia?

The Assurance of the Ecstatic: On Anh Vo’s Three Performances

Being possessed is not a state but a devotion.

A performance of Anh Vo: Possessed by… at The Rail Park. The work takes the form of a devotional dance to the spirits, continuing a performance Vo previously staged on June 14, 2025, in front of the Apple Store in Downtown Brooklyn. There, the artist worshipped the temple of capitalism, drawing out the religiosity embedded in the store's architecture. In this iteration, Vo applies a similar logic: animating the site through repetitive, abstract movement to explore how architecture can embody systems of belief.
