thINKingDANCE Launches Emerging Writers Fellowship

thINKingDANCE is pleased to announce the inaugural launch of the Emerging Writers Fellowship. This fellowship recognizes exceptional work in the field of dance writing for two U.S.-based undergraduates studying in the performing arts, journalism, writing, or a related field. Recent college graduates are also welcome to apply. The Emerging Dance Writer’s Fellowship was created to foster the next generation of dance critics and writers, guiding them into the next phase of their career.

Selected writers will have their work published on thINKingDANCE as one of the premiere articles of the new year, along with a feature on our webpage. Selected fellows will be paired with a member of our editorial board to receive three hours of one-on-one mentorship/professional development during the editorial process of their work.

In addition, fellowship recipients will receive a $500 stipend.

The fellowship application requires a brief cover letter, serving as a space for applicants to introduce themselves, their work, and their interest in the fellowship. In accordance with thINKingDANCE’s mission statement, we welcome experimental or hybrid forms of writing. We welcome writing covering any dance genres, aesthetics, and styles. Prior to submitting, we encourage applicants to become acquainted with the types of articles we publish, outlined in the lower half of the guest writer page.

Submissions will be accepted from October 15th to November 15th, with the selected writers informed by December 1st.

A link to the application form can be found here. Questions can be directed to Editorial Board Member Megan Mizanty at meganm@thinkingdance.net.

The Assurance of the Ecstatic: On Anh Vo’s Three Performances

Being possessed is not a state but a devotion.

A performance of Anh Vo: Possessed by… at The Rail Park. The work takes the form of a devotional dance to the spirits, continuing a performance Vo previously staged on June 14, 2025, in front of the Apple Store in Downtown Brooklyn. There, the artist worshipped the temple of capitalism, drawing out the religiosity embedded in the store's architecture. In this iteration, Vo applies a similar logic: animating the site through repetitive, abstract movement to explore how architecture can embody systems of belief.
