Sample Pitch

Hi Lead Editor,

My name is Sadie J. Smith. I am a professional contemporary dancer and new writer currently based in East Texas. I value tD’s aim to bring fresh voices into dance writing and hope to add my perspective to that conversation.

I would like to pitch a thINK piece on the relationship between geography and access to professional dance opportunities. The article would address how location, economics, and visibility deeply impact who gets to be part of the professional dance landscape. I would structure this piece as a personal reflection that considers the implications of moving to East Texas for graduate school after living in the Northeast for the first decade of my professional career. While the article would focus on my own experiences, those stories intersect with more widespread challenges of trying to craft a life in dance outside of major metropolitan areas, a situation likely encountered by many tD readers.

Format: Narrative, approximately 800 words (perhaps a “Day in the Life” comparison between Huntsville and Boston or a walk-through of dancing where I live with notes on how that experience differs from larger metropolitan areas). Some significant differences in access I would like to identify:

1. Transportation
2. Training

3. Economics

I have a desire to entitle this piece something like TITLE

Let me know if this is a good fit for tD or if you have further questions.

Thank you for your consideration!
